9th edition of Guyana Where and What available¹
The ninth edition of “Guyana Where and What, the pocket-sized guidebook on Guyana”, is now available for visitors as well as Guyanese here. Like previous editions, Guyana Where and What, published by Gem Madhoo-Nascimento of GEMS Inc, contains comprehensive information on birding, fishing, historic Dutch sites, places of interest, sightseeing spots and eco-wonders. It contains special features on historical buildings, monuments and structures in New Amsterdam, Linden and the Essequibo Coast, and carries a personal experience of a visit to Orealla by one of its contributing writers. In its 140 pages, readers can locate hotels, restaurants, tour operators, tourist resorts, banks, hospitals, opticians, jewellery stores, boutiques, computer and electrical stores.
In celebration of Guyana’s Golden Jubilee, the cover features the Independence Arch and the logo is specially designed for the event. The early pages contain a special feature on the history of Guyana’s Independence. The information section of this edition has been translated into Portuguese for the benefit of the growing population of Brazilians in Guyana and to support Brazilian tourists, businessmen and traders. The guidebook also has a pullout map of Guyana, 10ins x 12ins, and an extended map of Georgetown, showing up to Cummings Lodge to the east and Industrial Estate, South Ruimveldt Park and South Ruimveldt Gardens to the south. The design and layout were done by Grafix House. Nascimento said last week, that since the guidebook has been supported mainly through advertising revenue from businesses, it is free of cost. She said that 20,000 copies are in circulation at hotels, restaurants, airports, tour operators, resorts, travel agencies and embassies. Copies can also be obtained from the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) in Waterloo Street, and from the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) at the Sophia Complex. The first edition of Guyana Where and What was published in 2007 by GEMS Inc for World Cup Cricket, and has been published annually. It has been in popular demand since then.
